Pine Barrens Tree Frog

These frogs may be small, but they have some distinctive characteristics that set them apart. Pine Barrens treefrogs are a beautiful green coloration with a deep brown mask that fades to lavender as it extends down the lateral aspect of the frog’s body. They also feature wide, dark stripes that make them more recognizable. A lavender stripe on either side of the frog’s body gives them a very specific look. The Pine Barrens Tree Frog is smaller than most other species, often only a few inches long.
This species is located in the Pine Barrens area of New Jersey, south central North Carolina, and a few small and isolated areas in the deep South. They live in areas with thick moss, preferring to come out only at night and in damp conditions. As adults, Pine Barrens treefrogs feed on ants, flies, bees, slugs, and other invertebrates.
The only documented predators of adult Pine Barrens treefrogs are banded water snakes and ribbon snakes. These frogs can live anywhere between 2 and 5 years in captivity, however they average a slightly shorter lifespan in the wild.
